Due to strong growth and rapid expansion, the company now has an opening for a Support and Quality Assurance Engineer.

The Role

Green Island is looking for a passionate problem solver to join our growing team. We pride ourselves on providing above and beyond customer service and technical support. You will be joining a highly effective team that takes pride in the work that they do.

Start Date - Time Frame

This position is open immediately, and needs to be filled as soon as possible. Although this position is available as a 3-6 month contract initially, a full-time position with Green Island will be an option depending on performance. Working remotely is optional, however the candidate should be within commuting distance of our Dublin or New York locations.

Experience

Solid "well rounded" experience with Java and web development is a must. The succesful applicant should be mature and responsible. All of the following are required:

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in CS or related major
  • 3+ years experience coding or support for web systems/services in Java
  • 3+ years experience with HTML, XML, JavaScript, etc.
  • Diverse knowledge of web technologies

Responsibilities

The successful candidate would be responsible for the following:

  • Answering to CTO, team leads and project managers
  • Management of own schedule (while working to project milestones and deadlines)
  • High standards for integrity of final product
  • Understanding & enforcement of coding standards & documentation

Skills

The successful candidate will possess most or all of the following skills:

  • Solid experience in HTML / DHTML / XML / CSS / JavaScript.
  • Solid experience in Proficiency in Java and J2EE, particularly JSPs, Servlets, and taglibs.
  • Proficiency in at least one commercial graphics editor application, such as Photoshop or Fireworks.
  • Experience with a J2EE application development framework such as Struts or Spring.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and analytical reasoning skills.
  • Mature, self-motivated, and able to produce well under minimal supervision.

What We Need:

  • The ability to communicate in a professional and easy to understand manner
  • The ability to turn concerned or upset users into happy users
  • The ability to remain calm, collective, and friendly even when dealing with difficult situations and/or frustrated users
  • The ability to efficiently respond to a significant number of emails per day (once you are up to speed you should be handling around 20 issues per day)
  • Knowledge and/or experience of web based software and Java/MySQL
  • Experience with FTP & SSH
  • A passion for problem solving

Some Things Your Day Could Consist Of:

  • Assisting users via email, live chat, and possibly phone
  • Debugging potential software issues
  • Troubleshoot issues
  • Working to resolve & fix software issues (along with working with other developers to find solutions)
  • Helping users with Site Caddy use questions
  • Writing and updating knowledge base articles

Technologies

Green Island uses predominantly Java and Open Source technologies. Knowledge of many of the following is advantageous:

  • Code: Java, J2EE, JSP, Servlets
  • Server: Apache with Tomcat
  • Database: MySQL, Hibernate and JCR a plus
  • Web: HTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX

Environment

Applicants should be comfortable working in the following environments:

  • OS: Windows and Linux
  • IDE: Eclipse / MyEclipse
  • Server: Apache with Tomcat
  • Version Control: Subversion or other similar VCS

Salary is competitive and based on your experience, and whether position is full-time or contract. Please include salary requirements with CV/Résumé.

Benefits

At Green Island we believe that a modern, flexible working environment is the best way to keep our team happy, reduce costs, and help the environment! While staff are expected to be available for meetings with managers, team members and (possibly) clients on a regular basis, flexible hours can be arranged and teleworking is optional. This position would not entail regular travel, although infrequent trips between New York and Dublin locations may be required.
